Aki Kaurismäki is one of Finnish film's strongest short. With a peculiar mix of black humour, poetic imagery and humanism, the auteur has come to draw modern Finland. In Drifting Clouds, he tells the story of how married couple Lauri and Ilona suddenly lose their jobs and income — and how they manage to move on. Two perfectly ordinary people with apartment, dog and twosomeness. But instead of focusing on the firing itself, Kaurismäki concentrates on how these two people overcome the challenges. Using its stylistically pure idiom and use of expressive colors, 'Drifting Clouds' becomes a warm, beautiful and endlessly serene depiction.
