DR Symphony Orchestra
Serge Prokofiev's interpretation of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet as ballet music features the composer's best-known and immersive music. No one could have done better -- Prokofiev capitalizes on his gift for personally imprinted melodies and his distinctive combination of sharp edge and soft, romantic core.
Gemma New, an outstanding young conductor from New Zealand, debuts this evening in Denmark with her own selection of movements from Prokofiev's glittering ballet score, while bringing more danceable music with her.
The Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz impressively manages to tune the symphony orchestra into contemporary Mexico in her work Antrópolis, whose synthesis of Mexico City's nightclubs makes the orchestra groove, play and pulse.
Danish accordion player Bjarke Mogensen is the soloist in what is considered by many to be Astor Piazzolla's greatest work. In Aconcagua, the great pioneer of Argentine 'new tango' shows how varied, sophisticated and moving the style can be. The piece moves from intensely focused to more relaxed tango style—without missing a single beat along the way.
