Originally, the film was to be made in Poland by order of the Gaumont label, however, the introduction of martial law in Poland in December 1981 nullified both the plans for the production and distribution of the film in the country. Without giving up the creation, the director moved the whole project to France, where he realized it with the participation of a group of Polish actors.
The action begins in the spring of 1794, when the terror introduced by Georges Danton is already raging in revolutionary France. At a tumultuous meeting of the Committee for the Salvation of the Public, Jacobin Jacques Nicolas Billaud-Varenne openly accuses Danton of counterrevolutionary activity directed against the committees. Robespierre is opposed to Danton's arrest and trial, but he struggles to impose his opinion on other members of the Committee concerned about Danton's influence and popularity.
