About the event

Who rebuilt the factories in Wroclaw after the war? Who were the people who created industrial Wroclaw anew?

On 20 October at 18:00 we invite you to a lecture by Prof. Jędrzej Chumiński “Wrocław Industry and its Employees 1945—1956”.

We will look at the first post-war years of Wrocław from the perspective of people who came here from the Borderlands, the Old Lands, from the countryside and from the cities, set up industrial plants and at the same time built their lives in a completely new reality. We will talk about the condition of Wrocław's industry after 1945, its reconstruction and how the new community of workers was formed. The meeting will be led by Prof. Jędrzej Chumiński — economist and economic historian associated with the Wrocław University of Economics, who has been studying the history of industry and post-war social transformations for years. He is, among others, the author of the book “The cadres decide everything. The New Intelligence in Polish Industry (1945—1956).

📅 October 20, 6:00 p.m. 📍 Branch no. 22 of the Municipal Public Library, Chociebuska Street 8—10 — right next to the National Public Library. 🎟 Free admission, no registration.

The lecture is the second part of our story about the industrial history of Wrocław. On October 13, Dr. Patrick Starczewski will talk about the Linke-Hofmann plants and the history that preceded the creation of PAFAWAG, and a week later we will move on to the reality after 1945.

Both events are organized jointly with the Tadeusz Różewicz Municipal Public Library in Wrocław and the Ładne Historie Foundation as part of the project “Communities: Literature as a Tool of Locality”, which combines books, local history and the memory of the inhabitants, encouraging a better understanding of the places where we live. We invite you to both meetings — together they create the history of Wrocław's industry before and after 1945.

The project “Communities: Literature as a Tool of Locality” was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund — a state special purpose fund.
