Meeting with Antonina Tosiek, author of the book “Sorry for ugly writing”; Wydawnictwo Czarne, 2025

Between 1933 and 1995, as many as ninety thousand women could take part in memoir competitions for rural residents. This is Nowy Sącz or half Olsztyn of the memoirs. For many of the heroines in this book, writing down memories was an act of acknowledging that their story deserves attention. For the first time, they had the opportunity to look at personal experiences and give them meaning beyond the private sphere. Antonina Tosiek reached out to hundreds of original manuscripts and typescripts submitted to competitions, as well as statistical data and scientific studies. Combining insightful analysis with sensitivity, she created a picture of the transformations of the Polish countryside in the 20th century. Realistic and deeply moving picture.
