“Tkliwe Points” by Karo Szczypek is a multi-layered story about a disabled body and its needs, about the support of another person, as well as about social morality and symbolic power structures. The author asks aloud questions that explore the limits of morality in modern society: are we ready to recognize the sexuality of people with disabilities and their right to realize their sexual needs?
The stories outlined by Szczypek intertwine between three planes: the relationship of a person with a disability with a sexual assistant, the media world describing this “sensational” story of a journalist, and poetic monologues in which the body, illness and tenderness become unexpected tools of resistance. “Tender Points” is a story about intimacy—both physical and emotional—and how society regulates access to body, touch, and desire. It is also a brave and poignant drama about the limits of the body, about sexual assistance and about the need for closeness. The author collides intimacy with the language of the system — medical, media and corporate — creating a powerful, up-to-date portrait of contemporary sensibility. In her world, tenderness is sometimes an act of rebellion, and touch a form of political opposition.
