Puscifer

Puscifer is a project of three creative partners: Matt Mitchell, Carina Round and Maynard James Keenan. It is a space for musical and visual storytelling - present on stages all over the world and in music videos, animations and other artistic forms. The band has acclaimed albums, sold out tours, performances at festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo, as well as its own touring festival Sessanta. Their music has been featured on the television series “Yellowstone”, and their albums regularly appear in the Top 30 Billboard 200. They have also appeared on American television shows such as “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” or “The Late Show.”
Puscifer is also an open, changeable collective of collaborators - from musicians (Greg Edwards, Gunnar Olsen, Sarah Jones), through remixers (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Phantogram, Sir Mix-A-Lot), to actors (Bob Odenkirk, Milla Jovovich). In parallel, here there is an extensive, humorous-surreal “Pusciverse” with its own characters that form a separate narrative. It is a kind of 21st century artistic “freak show” in which everything is possible.

The project was born in the 90s, when Maynard James Keenan moved to Los Angeles and, in parallel with his musical career, participated in the Hollywood comedy scene. It was there that the first seeds of Puscifer began to form - as a loose, performative form combining different voices and ideas. As Keenan says, Puscifer is “a whirlwind of many voices in the head” and unlimited space for music, film, art and animation.

This philosophy is reflected in the fifth album “Normal Isn't”, which draws on gothic, post-punk and new wave, combining them in the band's distinctive style. The album is more raw and guitar-like than previous releases, with a greater emphasis on energy and directness of sound.

The creation process also changed - Maynard began to work directly in music programs (Logic and Pro Tools), preparing sketch ideas, which were then developed together. The team emphasizes that there is no ego or rigid rules in Puscifer - the free exchange of ideas and full openness to change are what matters.

The album was recorded between Arizona and a new studio in Los Angeles, using analog synthesizers (including Moog, Fairlight CMI, Synclavier) and a more exposed guitar that gives the whole a sharper feel.

“Normal Isn't” is about a world that doesn't seem normal - it's a commentary on modernity, chaos and imbalance. As Keenan points out, the artist's job is to observe, interpret and communicate what he sees. And what we see today is “definitely not normal.”
