Beethoven cycle with Quatuor Ébène

info

In the Beethoven cycle in our quartet series, the Quatuor Ébène shows time and again what incredible development the composer has made in this genre. Even in his early works — for example in Opus 18 No. 3 — he proved to be on a par with his idols Mozart and Haydn. But from his middle creative period, his quartets gain in musical audacity and emotional impact: In the gloomy Opus 59 No. 2, the second movement, characterized by floating harmonies, shines, for which Beethoven was inspired by the starry sky. The “Quartetto serioso” is edgy and rugged and already gives an idea of the radicalism of his later works.
