What happened at the Gliwice Radio Station on the evening of August 31, 1939? How was the operation prepared by the Nazi services and how was the daily life of this place on the eve of the war? The Museum in Gliwice invites you on Sunday, 25 October at 12.00 to a special event that will allow us to look at the history of the Radio Station from the perspective of one of the most dramatic moments of the 20th century.
The Gliwice radio station is not only a unique technical monument and one of the most recognizable symbols of Gliwice. It is also the place where the events considered one of the direct pretexts for the start of the Second World War took place. The Gliwice provocation, carried out by the Nazi services on August 31, 1939, was supposed to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany. During the October meeting, participants will be able to look at its course, circumstances and historical significance.
The event will begin with a screening of the documentary film “How the Gliwice Provocation Went”, presenting the next stages of the operation prepared by the Nazi services. After that, participants will go on a special tour of the facility. Walking through the historical route of the attack on the Radio Station, they will learn a reconstruction of events developed on the basis of historical knowledge available today.
However, the story will not be limited to the provocation itself. It will also allow you to look behind the scenes of the functioning of the Radio Station, learn about the specifics of the work of its crew and understand what role the radio played in times of increasing political tension. At that time, it was not only a means of communication, but also a powerful means of propaganda influence.
Kamil Gałazka, the manager of the facility and passionate about its history, will show the participants around the Radio Station. Thanks to the combination of a film projection with a story conducted in an authentic space of events, the meeting will become an opportunity to learn about the history of a place whose significance goes far beyond the local history of Gliwice.
