&# #x1f538; Raphael Roginski Plays John Coltrane & Langston Hughes

Raphael Roginski's Plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes is a show that has accompanied the musician in various periods for more than 10 years. With this program, the musician played hundreds of concerts. This year, to mark the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane's birth, Roginski plays around the world, adding new Coltrane compositions and filtering them through his very personal style.

Approaching Coltrane's unique, spirited music from a perspective formed outside the jazz tradition, Roginski slowed the songs down, extracting polyphonic tensions and striving for intimacy and mysticism that transcended the genre. The result turned out to be a revelation for the guitarist.

“Suddenly, these pieces filled with luminous, moving images — melancholy, but also something of a promise,” he says.

Roginski mentions:

“At that time, I lived in an apartment where ficus branches grew. I sat in the 35-degree heat, under its leaves, on the carpet, discovering the polyphony of that music. In the same period, I met a broken person on the street. She stayed with me for a few days — she was the victim of an ultra-religious family from whom she fled. She slept on the couch, recovering, and I started playing. As if for her. I had to bring light into her life and I did what I could best — and that's how this music came about.”

The album also includes two tracks inspired by the poems of Langston Hughes, one of the most important figures of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s and one of the pioneers of jazz poetry.

Roginski's longstanding interest in mystical experiences in different cultures led him to the poetry of Hughes, to which he pays homage — poetry, he says, “full of brilliance and goodness.” The line “I've known rivers: ancient, dusky rivers” creates a subtle connection with the images of flowing water and the Black Sea, which appear on Roginski's later album Talàn, as well as with the lakes of the Polish-Lithuanian border present on Žaltys. Roginski's distinctive musical language stems from a deep conviction of the interconnectedness of all things.

An extended reissue of his 2015 album was released by the Unsound Festival label in 2024. Over the years, the album has only grown in importance — solo guitar interpretations, or rather reinterpretations of John Coltrane's works, draw on Roginski's unique and instantly recognizable style, rooted in jazz, blues and musical traditions from different parts of the world.

The album was originally released by Warsaw-based Bôłt Records as part of the Populista series. Curator Michał Libera describes the series as “devoted to misinterpreting or over-interpreting existing music”. Roginski's Plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes fits perfectly with this concept, given the distance that the guitarist overcomes from Coltrane's original form of composition. However, as Libera notes, the album “just came to me as ready to release”.

The extended reissue includes four new songs recorded in Warsaw in the summer of 2024 — almost a decade after the original recordings — but which return to the idea of a radical reinterpretation of Coltrane's work. Roginski's playing has changed subtly over the years, it is now imbued with an even greater gentleness and intimacy, reminiscent of Talàn. As always, his playing is delightful; the recordings were made solo, with no overtime.

The idea for new works came from Roginski himself. One gets the impression that he could play and reinterpret this music endlessly. The new recordings were made after a marathon of 52 concerts in three months.

“Playing live reinforces what we do in the studio,” Roginski says. “There's even more light in these tracks now.”

The album Plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes established Roginski's position as one of the most original voices of contemporary guitar music. His versions of Coltrane's works — slow, polyphonic, full of tension and inner silence — create an intimate, meditative concert that appeals to jazz listeners as well as to audiences interested in alternative, experimental and contemporary music.

The visual layer of the concert refers to the cover of the new edition of the album — three paintings by Marcin Janusz from the Calendar 2023 series.
