Denmark is under attack! An attack staged by a Norwegian who has come to set fire to our national self-understanding.
After a series of sensational political performances in Norway, Norwegian theatre provocateur Even Torgan now turns his gaze to Denmark. His theory is simple:
We are more radicalized than we think.
At the Writers' School in Copenhagen, a group of young writers meet who want to change the world with words. But as issues of racism, free speech, identity and Danishness divide the class, the school is transformed into a battleground.
RAPING DENMARK <3 (or: how I rose up and conquered the kingdom) is a theatrical attack on Danish self-understanding. A search of radicalisation, cultural culpability and political silence.
About a Denmark that celebrates itself as free, open and tolerant, while the boundaries of what we can say about “the others” are constantly shifting. Who has the power to define Denmark? And who gets to be the good guy in the tale of the intolerant?
Even Torgan has made a name for himself as Norwegian theatre's up-and-coming enfant terrible. At Edison, he invites the audience directly into the performance and confronts us with an uncomfortable question:
Is Denmark as tolerant as we tell ourselves?
Or has radicalisation already moved in without us having detected it?
