Art mediator Hanne Flarup introduces Spanish-Mexican Remedios Varo's magical pictorial world and her relation to some of Surrealism's great female voices.
We follow Varo's stormy life from the art scene in war-torn Europe to Mexico, where she finds her new home and develops the very peculiar imagery that was to make her one of Surrealism's defining artists. Next, we delve into Varo's relationship with his closest collaborators and friends in Mexico, Leonora Carrington and Kati Horna. They became known as the Three Witches and shared a close artistic bond. The lecture also unfolds the story of several surrealist women artists and draws threads to the origins of the movement in 1920s and 1930s Paris.
