Reindeer

“The Reindeer” is a poignant musical monodrama by Jan Kowalewski based on a text by Richard Gadd, inspired by the true story of a young comedian whose innocent gesture towards a foreign woman triggers an avalanche of events out of control. The show is about a relationship that gradually turns into an obsession, and about the fine line between the need for closeness and destructive entanglement. This is a story not only about stalking, but also about co-responsibility, shame and the mechanisms that lead to self-destruction. The “reindeer” peeks under the surface of easy divisions into victim and executioner. With uncompromising honesty, he touches on the topics of addiction, loneliness, sexuality and the need to be noticed. It is the intimate confession of a man involved in a relationship that exposes his weakest points and forces him to confront himself. The title “Reindeer” can be known to a wide audience from the high-profile serial adaptation of the Netflix platform. However, it is worth remembering that this story was first created as a stage text and was performed by the author on stage long before the television realization. It was the form of theatrical monodrama that became her original and most personal form.
