Suburbs of Tokyo, 1987. 11-year-old Fuki watches the slow decay of her home world. Her father, Keiji, struggles with an incurable illness, and her mother, Utako, overwhelmed by work and caring for her sick husband, becomes emotionally absent. Left to herself, Fuki escapes into the depths of her own imagination. Fascinated by telepathy and fantasies, the girl tries to understand the mystery of loss and find closeness in a world that seems more and more alien to her.
Inspired by his own childhood experiences, “Renoir” is a subtle meditation on mourning, childhood sensitivity and the delicate threads of understanding that bind us together in moments of isolation.
