William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet transferred to the modern realities of the subculture of rival gangs.

The action takes place in the fictional town of Verona Beach, Florida at the turn of the 20th century. It begins at a gas station, where there is a shootout between fighting gangs, linked to two of the most important families in the city: the Capulets and the Montecs. Against this background, the love thread of two young people develops - Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Julia (Claire Danes).
