The story of Romeo and Juliet, raised by Shakespeare to the rank of myth, did not receive a ballet version until the 20th century thanks to Sergei Prokofiev's music from 1935. In a production prepared for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1984, Rudolf Nureyev brought this dazzling and dynamic score to life, giving the production a sumptuous and almost cinematic form. His choreography focuses on showing Romeo's transformation from a boy to a man and the tragic circumstances in which a passionate Julia enters adulthood.
