In Verona, Romeo Monteki and Julia Kapulet meet and fall in love without memory, yet their families have long been united by fierce hostility. Driven by a feeling as strong as it is impossible to fulfill, the young lovers are heading for a tragic destiny that will unite them forever.
The story of Romeo and Juliet, raised by Shakespeare to the rank of myth, did not receive a ballet version until the 20th century thanks to Sergei Prokofiev's music from 1935. In a production prepared for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1984, Rudolf Nureyev brought this dazzling and dynamic score to life, giving the production a sumptuous and almost cinematic form. His choreography focuses on showing Romeo's transformation from a boy to a man and the tragic circumstances in which a passionate Julia enters adulthood. Balls, youthful conflicts and duels played against the backdrop of the intricately recreated Italian Renaissance give drama and allow to resound the story of the lovers of Verona, entangled in the eternal conflict of their families.
