Scratch Night at Roundhouse, Camden
Here’s an overview of the 4 Artists bringing their work to the stage:
Backway by Mamour Touray
Falling out of tune with routine life in Gambia and met by financial strain, Modou Lamin is a young taxi driver who considers risking life and limb to cross the Mediterranean in search of a better life in Europe. Lured by the lasting effects of colonisation and western propaganda, he is at throes with what home means to him. This poetic dialogue, shaped by memory and innocence, shines light on often unspoken stories about migrants, questioning the causes which lead certain people to embark through the backway.
Post-Truth Clarity by Scarlet-Rose Elise
The lives of two bitter exes, two best friends, and a family are entangled throughout time after a scientist perfects their truth serum.
Age Guidance: 16+
Content Warnings: Content Warning: Spiking, very brief reference to miscarriage and bodily autonomy
FLORENCE by Chisara Agor
“I wish to make people happy always.” Legendary performer and trailblazer Florence Mills, dubbed the queen of happiness, is often missing from conversations surrounding the Jazz Age and Harlem Renaissance. In FLORENCE, Chisara Agor pieces together the inspiring life of a young girl from Washington, D.C. who became one of the first female African American global sensations while bravely confronting discrimination both at home and abroad using art as a way to change hearts and minds. Agor builds this story not through videos and recordings (there are no known videos or recordings of Florence Mills), but by weaving together evidence and traces of a selfless life that burned bright and fast throughout the world. We meet Florence for the first time at the height of her career in her dressing room at the London Pavilion, as she recounts what it takes to become Harlem’s little Blackbird and the toll of always putting yourself last.
Age Guidance: Under-14s must be accompanied by an adult
Content Warnings: Language of the era that some audiences may find triggering or offensive
Double, Double, Coil and Trouble by Millie Butler
A darkly comic descent into one very bad shift. In a ‘trendy’ new café in Southeast London, an overworked barista is already battling overflowing dishes, screaming children, entitled customers, and a manager who has abandoned his responsibilities. But when a routine toilet break takes an unexpected and bloody turn, the thin veneer of workplace professionalism begins to crack. Double, Double, Coil, and Trouble is a visceral and absurd glimpse into the indignities of precarious service work. From oat babyccinos and luxury prams to blocked sinks and industrial washing-up liquid, the mundane becomes grotesque, and the grotesque becomes strangely hilarious. As frustration, exhaustion, and bodily chaos collide, the protagonist finds herself curled up on a bathroom floor, questioning why she is still there at all.
