For the first time in Poland, Roy Montgomery, a legend of the New Zealand independent scene and one of the most influential experimental guitarists, will play.
Roy Montgomery was born in London and grew up in Christchurch. In 1980, he co-formed the post-punk trio The Pin Group, whose single “Ambivalence” was the first release in the history of the iconic Flying Nun label. Even then, he could hear the echoing, melodic sound of the guitar, to which he remained faithful throughout his career.
After years of hiatus, he returned to music in the 1990s, co-creating Dadamah and then recording solo and in a duet Dissolve with Chris Heaphy. A real breakthrough turned out to be a trip around the world, during which he created, among others, “Temple IV” (kranky, 1995): an entirely instrumental album inspired by a night spent among the Mayan temples in Tikal.
In the following years, Montgomery recorded under his own name, collaborated with Bardo Pond as Hash Jar Tempo, reunited with Chris Heaphy on the music for a theatrical performance (album “True”), released a split with Grouper, and formed the duo Torlesse Super Group with Nick Guy. Today he lives in New Zealand, where he works as a university lecturer.
