A war-scarred soldier arrives in the fallen village, claiming to be the heir of an abandoned farm. The stranger arouses distrust, but quickly reconciles the community. In the cruel realities of seventeenth-century Europe, a woman without rights can only be free in disguise — so she must meticulously conceal her true nature. Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of the Fall”, “The Zone of Interests”, “The Hail Mary Project”) was awarded the Silver Bear for the title role at the last Berlin festival. “The Rose” is a perverse tale about the price of freedom and the courage to live on your own terms. The film reminds us that the right to be oneself still needs to be earned.
