Directed by Markus Schleinzer, “The Rose” is a perverse, extremely timely story about the price of freedom and the courage to live on your own terms. The story presented at the last Berlinale takes us to the German countryside of the 17th century and questions the established social mechanisms.
The film tells the story of a mysterious soldier marked by war, who arrives in the village claiming to be the heir of the farm. In order to survive and be himself in the cruel realities of the era, the title character must hide his true identity under a male costume.
The latest work of the Austrian director stars the outstanding Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of the Fall”, “Zone of Interests”), who was awarded the Silver Bear for her creation. Elegant, strict pictures and minimalist form build a dense atmosphere of anxiety and danger.
