Venue: HAU2

Part of “Love is a Verb #2”

Rébecca Chaillon and Sandra Calderan are a couple both on stage and in private life. In this lively and intimate performance, they explore what it means to “start a family.” Together, they invite the audience into their specially created home world.

While Sandra desperately tries to build as many small houses as possible out of old wood, Rébecca comes from the city to give rural life a chance. Surrounded by building materials, wallpaper and objects from their everyday lives, they consider what place they could both take up in their new home and their new family.

The audience witnesses their attempts to recreate a perfect family — between moments of celebration, loneliness, fantasies and failure... One after the other, they ask each other questions about the inherited, the invented and the self-chosen family.

In doing so, they do not offer ready-made solutions, but invite the audience to join the search: How can families be formed when one is white, lives with their ex, their children and their ex's new family, while the other is black, lives in the city and spends more time in the theaters of France and Navarra than in their own apartment?

With mischievous humor, they revisit the Catholic iconography of the Holy Family. In a generous scenic jumble that reflects their lives, they enjoy reassembling traditional, patriarchal, white, heterosexual “family models.” As in a television series that stretches over several seasons, their thoughts can take a different direction at any time.
