The film takes place in a provincial town, very similar to the one Konwicki described in the novel “Contemporary Dream Book” published two years earlier. As there, here too, it gives the impression of a surreal fantasy and reality located on the border between waking and dream. One day a mysterious man appears in the town. He introduces himself as Kowalski — Malinowski. To astonished residents, he presents different versions of his biography. One says that he fought in the war, others that he is in hiding and is in danger. Imperceptibly, his false legend storms the dreamy life of a deserted settlement.
