Sam Quealy's second album 'JAWBREAKER' has taken its title from the bolchet that shares a distinctive character with her music: a piece of candy which is both addictively sweet and dangerously hard, and is loved by many for its potential to wreak glorious havoc.
As an impressive follow-up to her 2023 debut album 'Blonde Venus', the Paris-based singer and songwriter adds a new element of disco to her lavishly anarchic dancepop. She puts rich grooves and heavenly melodies on top, while fully matching the chaotic energy of the world around her. 'JAWBREAKER' is a brilliant collision of sensitivity and subversion, exaggerated bombast and hyper-femininity and ultimately confirms Quealy as a shape-shifting visionary who defies all conventions.
Now Quealy is gearing up for an extensive tour in conjunction with 'JAWBREAKER', where she delivers a dazzling live show driven by her extravagant charisma. “I have a strong masculine energy on stage, but I'm also very feminine, to the point where it almost becomes draggy, like I'm playing a caricature of a woman with my big wigs and high heels,” she recounts. But despite the extravagant costumes, her stage performance exudes a distinct authenticity. “I feel most like myself when I'm on stage, and a big part of my desire to make music comes from the desire to perform it live,” Quealy recounts. “When I'm on stage, it's like I'm being possessed — there's so much energy flowing through me and everyone else in the room. It's this amazing exchange between the audience and me and my dancers, and we're all there to be ourselves with no excuses.”
