Violinist, singer and composer: three words that describe Sara Parkman. But they are far from enough to cover the breadth of what she has achieved since making her debut in 2016.
Sara Parkman, through her career, has shifted the boundaries of what folk music can be. Her albums and concerts have been praised for the way they weave tradition and future together, and along the way she has received a number of prestigious honors, including a Swedish Grammis, DN's Culture Prize and the Ulla Billquist Scholarship. At the same time, she has toured to sold-out halls and marked herself as a central figure in the new Scandinavian folk music scene.
On her fourth album, Aster, atlas, Sara Parkman explores the mystical tradition and work that lies in living - and in caring for the living. The album moves through grief, beauty, body, growth and decay, borrowing imagery from the Secret Garden.
Musically, the calling tones of Nordic folk music meet with early church choral traditions and vibrant digital elements. At the same time, the album marks new steps in Sara Parkman's musical evolution - from the powerful and majestic to the more introverted and pensive.
An overarching theme is the idea of praying and working - ora et labora in Latin. For Sara Parkman, that thought holds both comfort, hope and a call to continue working and believing in the common in a time that can feel more than ordinary demanding.
