“Portrait of Freedom”
“Spartacus”
Opera Slaska, Poland
Choreography: Robert Balogh
There are heroes whose story does not end with the last page of the chronicles or with the closing of the curtain. They return because in each age they remind us of what is most important in man. The jubilee edition of the International Festival of Dance Theatres SCENA OTWARTA opens with just such a story — the monumental “Spartacus” of the Silesian Opera to the music of Aram Chaczaturian choreographed by Robert Balogh.
It is difficult to imagine a better start to the festival dedicated to “Portraits of Dance”. It is a portrait of a man who refused to live without dignity. Robert Balogh creates a ballet in which classical technique meets the intensity of theatrical gesture, and each movement has meaning and carries the story further.
The realization of the Silesian Opera impresses with its scale and precision. More than 40 artists, multi-cast scenes, brilliantly conducted duets and expressive choreographic narration build tension from the first bars to the poignant finale.” Karolina Wójs — director of MFTT OPEN SCENE The artistic class of the performance is confirmed by two Golden Masks — for choreographer Robert Balogh and soloist Douglas de Oliveira Ferreira playing the character of Spartacus. It is a performance that has won the recognition of both critics and the audience, becoming one of the most important events of the last seasons of the Silesian Opera.
Spartacus becomes a symbol of courage, responsibility for others and steadfastness in the face of violence. He fights not only for his own freedom, but also for the right of man to decide his own destiny. That's why his story remains so moving for me as well.” Douglas de Oliveira Ferreira — soloist of the Silesian Opera It is impossible to speak of “Spartacus” without the music of Aram Chaczaturian — one of the most outstanding ballet scores of the 20th century. Monumental fanfare, lyrical love themes and folk-inspired rhythms create a world that engages all the senses. Music becomes his equal dance partner, guiding the characters through triumphs, self-doubt and dramatic choices.
The inaugural evening will be of particular interest to lovers of classical ballet, grand shows and timeless stories told with gusto.
“Spartacus” opens the OPEN STAGE as a tale of courage that can change history — and move generations of viewers.
