In the Indonesian village of Bengkala on the island of Bali, almost all the inhabitants, both hearing and deaf, can speak the local Kata Kolok sign language. The divisions known to us into fit and out of order are suspended there. How does it feel to visit this community where the norm is significantly shifted?

The Bengkali community is the inspiration for the artist performer, Daniel Kotowski, in his work for STUDIO entitled “Scenography of Voices”. Kotowski's action will be based on reversing the discourse of power possessed by those considered capable. Daniel being a deaf person is often automatically perceived as a dumb person. In his performance, he will become the one who speaks — a “speaker” whose sounds will be interpreted by actors and actresses. The central question of the project is: to what extent is man able to produce his subjectivity outside the discourse of power that affects bodies? Perhaps in order to see certain boundaries more clearly it is necessary to reverse the hierarchy and expose its absurdity.

So far, the ensemble led by Kotowski in Set of Voices has created a space in which deaf and hearing people meet in equal positions in the artistic experience, and I know through my skin that we probably all come out richer from this situation.

In the performance “Scenography of Voices” (2024), realized at the Studio Theater, Kotowski tried to question the situation of communication inequality. The assumption that a deaf person is silent at the same time was challenged by the artist through a vivid metaphor — in this case, he became a “speaker” whose sounds were interpreted by hearing actresses and actors.
