The Gentz merchant family, the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the writer Theodor Fontane united the city from which they came: Neuruppin. Building on Alexander Gentz's wealth, the Oriental painters Wilhelm and Ismael Gentz came from the Gentz family. Related to the Schinkel family, the Gentzens offered the “Wanderer durch die Mark Brandenburg” Theodor Fontane enough material to immortalize his famous contemporaries in realizing the Prussian dream of the Orient.
