With his unmistakably deep bass lines and his magical grip on the mixing desk, legendary Jamaican producer Scientist has over the decades helped shape dub music as we know it today. Now he celebrates the 45th anniversary of the release of his main work “Scientist Rides the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires” (1981) and performs the album in its full length at ALICE through Feb. Don't miss a historic night with one of dub music's greatest pioneers and King Tubby's former right-hand man as he guests our concert hall during Winter Jazz.
Attention: Ticket sales start tomorrow, Friday, October 23 at 10am.
“The Scientist isn't just mixing — he's conducting a sonic symphony.” — Rolling Stone
Hopeton Brown — known worldwide as The Scientist Dubmaster — is hailed as one of the most innovative and influential pioneers of reggae and dub. The Jamaican producer began his career in the late 1970s in Kingston, where he developed his talents at the legendary King Tubby's iconic studio. Here he added a new dimension to the art of mixing by transforming the mixing desk into a living instrument that could shape, recompose and reimagine the sound itself. With its unmistakably deep bass lines, sprawling echoes and hypnotic reverb, Scientist has reinterpreted dub music and created a signature sound inspired by countless producers since.
His groundbreaking albums -- “Scientist Wins the World Cup” (1982), “Heavyweight Dub Champion” (1980) and not least “Scientist Rides the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires” (1981), which he plays this evening -- still stand as timeless masterpieces within the dub genre. Scientist has collaborated with some of reggae's greatest icons, including Barrington Levy, Roots Radics, Johnny Osbourne and Augustus Pablo, while inspiring new generations of musicians in reggae, hip hop and electronic music. In 2010, he even gushed over a remix of Lady Gaga's “Telephone” featuring Beyoncé! But this evening Scientist returns to the roots and performs his classic horror album in its full length.
