After a hugely successful Met debut (The Hours), composer Kevin Puts returns with his first Pulitze Award-winning rem opera. The story was inspired by the real events of the Christmas Armistice of 1914, when soldiers during World War I spontaneously emerged from the trenches to meet, exchange gifts and sing Christmas carols with the enemy. This moving tale of humanity in the most inhuman of circumstances — Puts' grand, cinematic opera with a libretto by Mark Campbell based on the film “Joyeux Noël” — has been widely acclaimed since its 2011 premiere, with The Guardian newspaper describing it as “an overwhelming emotional experience.” The opera “Silent Night” with a stellar cast was realized in an evocative staging that takes viewers straight to the battlefields of the Western Front.
