Scoundrel

The titular hero of Molière's “The Scoundrel” is one of the most prominent figures in the history of world comedy. At the same time, of the whole gallery of fathers who stand in the way of their children's happiness, he is perhaps the most ruthless and cruel figure. Harpagon fascinates, scares and laughs to tears. This is the man who converted the world into money and can no longer see anything but them. And stinginess isn't his only flaw, he's also a control-obsessed paranoid and narcissist — in that he's surprisingly similar to many middle-aged gentlemen who can't help but tell us how to live...

“The Scoundrel” is also a love story surprisingly close to a romantic comedy. Young people love to death, sincerely and passionately, against calculations and above all against their father. They overcome all difficulties to finally achieve their dreams.

Molière combines these two elements — the father's need for control and the passion of the young — to create one of the greatest comedies of all time. Its timeless theme keeps it up to date and gives future generations of theatre makers the material for brilliant productions and expressive roles, while providing the audience with entertainment at the highest level.
