Hidden eyes

The set for 'Hidden Eyes' was the largest set to date ever built at the Paramount studio. An entire residential area, 31 apartments, 12 of which are fully furnished, and over 70 windows and doors. Hitchcock reportedly felt it enabled the creation of a separate cinematic film in which immobile photographer LB Jeffries (James Stewart) and his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) investigate a possible murder in the neighbouring property. Few films so clearly show the link between architecture and film, not only because the set was an architectural feat in itself, but also because the film is so much about urban voyeurism, where in every visible window you can lurk at the lives of your neighbors as in a movie.
