In his second novel, Mateusz Pakuła again goes back to family history. We move to Kielce in the early 1950s, in the middle of Stalinism. The author's grandfather goes to the Kielce torture chamber for a puppy prank. The man who comes to his aid opens the way to the history of the city marked by war, the Holocaust and the Kielce pogrom — and at the same time to the history of the next generation. What memory do we inherit from our ancestors? What do we do with the story we receive in inheritance? Can you build your own identity out of it?
“Skin after Grandpa” is a story about memory, family and history that does not end with the previous generation.
