Lecture by Dr. Agnieszka Patała accompanying the exhibition “Centulety. On the anniversary of the great exhibition of Silesian medieval art”
Altarpieces, also called retabulas, or colloquially — though erroneously — altars, were one of the most important branches of production of sculpture-painting workshops active in medieval Silesia. To our time, about 150 objects of this type have survived, stored in the interiors of churches or in museum spaces. What is striking is not only the circumstances of their creation and their original functions, but also their subsequent fate. Many times they have become participants in activities of propaganda importance, a tool of manipulation, as well as objects enabling to build and strengthen — in a positive sense — the identity of a given community.
Meeting in the Pavilion of the Four Domes, free admission. If you have any questions, please contact the P4K Education Department: edukacja.pawilon@mnwr.pl or call 71 712 71 81.
