About the event

Kazimierz Przerwę-Tetmajer is considered one of the symbols of the era of the turn of the 20th century. He is known as the creator of poetry, several novels and dramas, and short stories. Less commonly mentioned is that he was also a staunch art critic. His reviews and critical and artistic columns appeared regularly in many young Polish periodicals with a cultural and socio-literary profile. This side of the poet's creative activity was often not noticed.

The presentation will introduce the listeners to these slightly less known aspects of the life of the young Polish artist. During the lecture, Tetmajer's poetic works will appear, which were created based on concrete works of art, among others sculptures and paintings by Michelangelo and paintings by the 19th century symbolist Arnold Böcklin.

The meetings of the series Word and Image will be an opportunity to examine some aspects of the work of 19th century writers and highlight the themes related to art in it. In the case of Maria Konopnicka, these will include poetic works referring to the series of drawings by Arthur Grottger, the poet Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer will prove to be an established art critic, Gabriela Zapolska will be presented as a theater actress with a love for fashion, while Stanisław Wyspiański will appear through the prism of his letters, which he perceives reality from the perspective of the determinants of a work of art: color and line. The meetings will be led by lecturers of the University of Wroclaw: Prof. Justyna Bajda, Dr. Justyna Kowal and Dr. Fryderyk Nguyen.
