“The Servant of Two Gentlemen” is the most famous of Carlo Goldoni's Venetian comedies. Written in 1745 for nearly three centuries, it entertains and delights the spectators of the best European theatres. The Krakow Theatre Scena Stu presents it in a new translation by Jan Polewka, in a perfect staging by Krzysztof Jasiński and an excellent cast. Like many performances of the Scene of the Hundred, “Servant of Two Gentlemen” was enriched with music and singing, especially the play of Venetian masks dell'arte and the disturbing atmosphere of secret Venetian business.
The intrigue is triggered by the titular servant Arlequin di Batocchio, who, while serving two masters at the same time, mixes their commands, revealing secrets that require discretion and complicates the action at breakneck speed. Will he be able to get out of further trouble? Will young lovers find themselves and their feelings, and their fathers their Venetian money? You will see this by watching a thrilling spectacle — in a genre that is rare on Krakow's stages today. Did you know that in 18th century Venice there were heated disputes between supporters of different types of theater? Disputes that often led to demonstrations and street clashes, and even to the fact that the Doge of Venice was forced to ban the exhibition of new plays. In Krakow, theater audiences are not yet threatened by this, but the best remedy for theatrical excesses can always be a good, classic comedy.
