SML

The 23rd Jazztopad Festival will open SML, a Los Angeles-based quintet made up of stars from the booming jazz, improv and indie scene.

It consists of bassist Anna Butterss, synthesizer player Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, drummer Booker Stardrum and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. Their phonograph debut Small Medium Large was recorded during their first shows at the ETA club in Highland Park in late 2022 and early 2023, then released in the summer of 2024 and received flattering reviews. After its release, the group quickly expanded their activities, performing on many stages and working on their sound. Recordings from these events became the basis for the second album HOW YOU BEEN. This album presents the experience of artists who prove their confidence in a trance form, focused on the rhythm of improvisation, but also making better use of the possibilities offered by post-production.

After its release at the end of 2025, it received immense recognition from critics and fans, hitting numerous charts of the year and even attracting the attention of the “New York Times”. Concerts were equally popular, and support from respected media amplified the impact of their passionate energy. In March 2026, SML held a residency at the Big Ears Festival, where he performed for hundreds of listeners. At the end of June, Spontaneous Music Live was released, a disc containing two unedited improvisations recorded at the Zebulon club in Los Angeles. This is the first opportunity to see the recording, which is characterized by psychedelic realism and a linear, hypnotic expansion of the band's sound. We will also be able to expect this in November at NFM.

All fans of jazz and improvised music, as well as those who are just starting their adventure with them, are encouraged to purchase a pass for the upcoming 23rd edition of Jazztopad Festival!
