Mad scientists and travelers are the favorite heroes of the films of the legendary director Werner Herzog. Dr. Steve Boyes obsessively tracks giant elephants called ghosts, whose distant relative was exhibited as a trophy in a museum in Washington. We observe Bouyes's expedition to Angola, in uninhabited areas the size of England, which the natives call the end of the world. Herzog documents his hero's obsessions, dreams and extraordinary imagination, asking the question, isn't it better for elephants to remain out of human reach and function as the title spirits? And dreams of contact with the wild remained only in our dreams?
