What happens when literature and art aren't allowed to say what they want?

About the event

Why do some people in power throughout history try to control literature and narratives? What happens to communities when certain voices are silenced? And what does it mean to have the freedom to write, create and be heard? Join us for an evening at Sydhavn Library on October 21, where performing arts and conversation meet around censorship, literature, artistic freedom and freedom of expression.

Censorship of literature and art and restrictions on freedom of expression have existed throughout history and still exist today. But how do those in power try to control recounts and votes? What happens to writers and artists when their works are restricted, banned or tried to silence? And how can we recognize some of the same mechanisms across history and today?

At 7pm Something That Never WasWe begin with a screening of Ukrainian choreographer and dancer Anastasia Krasnoshchoka's solo dance work Something That Never Was. The work is based on the poetry and music of a generation of Ukrainian artists - The Executed Renaissance - who were censored and persecuted in the 1930s.

At 7:30pm Conversation and Q&A after the performance, the evening continues with a conversation about censorship, literature, artistic freedom and freedom of expression with professor and former chairman of Danish PEN (1983-90, 2015-22). Based on the work, we look at how artists and writers throughout history have faced censorship and pressure and at what we can recognize in contemporary examples. The conversation also opens up questions about what it means for our ability to understand each other and the world around us.

Come and experience, listen or join the conversation.
