Something that never wasWhy do some people in power throughout history try to control art and narratives? What happens to communities when some voices are silenced? What does it mean to have the freedom to create, speak and be heard?
Join us for an evening where art and conversation meet around censorship, free speech and the role of art in a democratic society.
Censorship of art and restrictions on freedom of expression have existed throughout history and still exist today. But how does censorship work in practice? What mechanisms cause humans to remain silent, and how can we recognize them across times and places? And what does it mean for societies when some narratives are given space while others are tried to be limited or silenced?
Program: 6.30-19.00 Something That Never Was
We begin with a viewing of Ukrainian choreographer and dancer Anastasia Krasnoshchoka's solo dance piece Something That Never Was. The work is based on the poetry and music of a generation of Ukrainian artists - The Executed Renaissance - who were censored and persecuted in the 1930s.
19.00-19.30 Conversation and Q&A. Obs. The conversation takes place in English.
After the performance, Anastasia meets human rights activist Mikkel Ivers for a conversation about censorship, freedom of expression and the role of art for a democracy.
Based on the work and Mikkel's experiences and work with people who have lived with oppression and limited freedom of expression, the conversation moves between historical experiences and contemporary issues and dilemmas.
Come and experience, listen or join the conversation.
