Donald Sutherland plays Mr. Bennett, who is the father of five daughters. In Jane Austen's time, girls could not inherit, and if Mr. Bennett dies without the girls having been married, the future of the family will be in jeopardy. The two eldest sisters — Lizzie and Jane — meet the newly arrived Mr. Bingley and his haughty friend Mr. Darcy. While Jane and Bingley immediately find the melody, Lizzie (Keira Knightley) and Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) have to go through an awful lot before they get their eyes on each other. Among the film's many impressive touches, the prom scene, recorded in one long take, is an utterly unforgettable moment.
