Lovis Corinth was an enthusiastic theatre-goer. After moving in 1901, he quickly found access to Berlin's theatre circles through the painter Walter Leistikow. He portrayed actors — including Tilla Durieux — in their roles and created designs for costumes and stage sets for productions by Max Reinhardt. The exhibition “Lovis Corinth. Then came Berlin!” dedicates a separate chapter to this topic.
In addition, Sophie Rois will read excerpts from Tilla Durieux's memoirs “My First Ninety Years.” Durieux (1880—1971) was one of the great stage stars of her time. She played under Max Reinhardt and Erwin Piscator, emigrated to Switzerland in 1933, to Zagreb in what was then Yugoslavia in 1937 and, after her return in 1952, appeared on German stages again until shortly before her death. Her memories tell of a life in the theatre, friendships between artists, the art trade of her second husband Paul Cassirer and link the personal with the cultural and political upheavals of the 20th century.
