Slowcore pioneer Spain is back at the Flea on October 19th!
Spain is an alternative rock band that was formed in Los Angeles in 1993 by songwriter and bassist Josh Haden. The band is known for their melancholic, atmospheric sound and their substantive, introspective lyricism, which helped shape the slow core genre in the early 90s with a unique combination of jazz, blues and indie rock.
Spain's unique sound is the result of Haden's jazz-tinged upbringing, flowing alongside influences from bands such as The Velvet Underground and Cowboy Junkies. The band's 1995 debut album, 'The Blue Moods Of Spain', became a genre-defining album for the slowcore genre. The track “Spiritual” from the record has later been covered by artists such as Johnny Cash and Pat Metheny, while the rest of the album shows Haden's affinity for hauntingly beautiful songwriting and melancholic minimalism.
Throughout the nineties, Spain acquired a cult fanbase through the features of the band's music in a number of films and TV series. In 2001, Haden put the project on hiatus to focus on his solo career and work with the hip hop supergroup, Handsome Boy Modeling School.
Spain was restored in 2007 with a completely new line up. Since its restoration, Spain has released the records 'The Soul of Spain', 'Sargent Place', 'Carolina' and 'Mandela Brush', which continue to explore themes of grief, loss and spirituality, though with a more diverse musical influence than the group's 90s slowcore classics.
2025 marked the 30th anniversary of the release of 'The Blue Moods Of Spain', which appeared as a re-issue the same year. Now Spain is back for round 2 of the celebration of the legendary album on October 19!
