Once to Syracuse and back — that's what Paul Gompitz (Charly Hübner) dreams of. With a trip to Sicily, he wants to follow in the footsteps of the poet Johann Gottlieb Seume. There is just one problem: The year is 1982 and Paul lives in the GDR. All attempts to obtain official approval for his departure fail. A visit to his cousin? Membership in the League for Friendship of Nations? A study trip? Everything is rejected! What else is left for him? Paul must plan his escape. What doesn't make things any easier: He also wants to go back home afterwards. Back to Rostock, to the Baltic Sea, to his wife Anne (Lina Beckmann). Paul devises a daring plan...
