About the event

We cordially invite you to the performance “Ambassador” by Sławomir Mrozek directed by Jarosław Gajewski.

“Ambassador” is a brilliant and ironic play by one of the most outstanding Polish playwrights. With his characteristic humor and insight, Mrozek shows the mechanisms of power, political games and human ambitions, raising questions about responsibility, freedom and the limits of compromise. The absurd is mixed with bitter reflection here, and the seemingly intimate story becomes a universal tale of a world in which appearances often replace truth.

Absurd humor combined with serious reflection on the condition of the modern world. Comism interspersed with tragedy, cliche with sublimity, farce with drama. Here is Sławomir Mrozek's “Ambassador” directed by Jarosław Gajewski.
“People are ruled by passions, so to rule people, you have to be governed by their passions.”
The drama was created in the eighties of the twentieth century. His action, although it obviously refers to the political realities prevailing at the time — the Cold War — raises dilemmas and problems equally important and pressing for every time. The title hero of the play has to face irreversible changes in his previously perfectly ordered life — the departure of his wife, but above all the loss of the state, which is the foundation of his existence.

The title character will be played by Andrzej Mastalerz. He will be partnered on stage by Dariusz Kowalski as the Man, Bartosz Turzyński as the Plenipotentiary and Małgorzata Mikołajczak playing Amelié and Maciej Wyczański playing Otella.
Sławomir Mrozek's “Ambassador” has in itself all the best in the writer's work. His wit is undoubtedly funny, but not carefree, it causes laughter and anxiety at the same time, relaxes and makes you think. It is worth listening carefully to this joke in order to catch deadly serious tones among the sincere laughter it evokes.

“I am against everything and that is why it is so difficult for me,” confessed Mrozek in “Personal Notes”, who, like no other, was able to “keep his hand on the pulse of events” and “expose some social wounds”. His lyrics go deep, they hit flawlessly, often painfully. In August 2023, 10 years have passed since his death. Bearing in mind the enormous legacy of the author, the creators decided to reach for the work, which contains universal values, so crucial for his work - self-respect, honor and fidelity to ideals. Thanks to the director's interpretation and excellent acting, the show takes the viewer on an extraordinary journey — a journey into the inner self, because Mrozek's brilliant humor not only entertains, but above all prompts reflection.
