28 October, 18.00, BCK performance hall, ticket 50/70 zł
Soon on the stage of the BCK “Antigone in New York” by Janusz Głowacki — a performance of the Juliusz Osterwa Theater in Lublin.
We are especially pleased to emphasize that in the cast we will see our compatriot — Jowita Stępniak, who plays the character of Anita.
“Antigone in New York” is one of Janusz Głowacki's most famous plays. The author transfers the ancient history of Sophocles from Thebes to a New York park where homeless people and immigrants live. Instead of the royal court, we meet people who live on the margins of society — deprived of their homes, money and security, but fighting for their dignity.
Anita, the beloved of the deceased man, learns that his body has been taken from the park and, according to the order of the authorities, is to be buried in a collective grave. A woman sets out to find the body and provide her beloved with a dignified burial — just like the ancient Antigone fighting for the right to bury her brother.
In this unusual story, tragedy is mixed with absurdity and black humor. Głowacki created a sharp, funny and at the same time moving tragifarce about loneliness, exclusion, love and the need to preserve dignity.
