A musical lesson in European art.
A musical performance inspired by the life and work of Zbigniew Herbert, based on a compilation of essays from his collection “The Barbarian in the Garden”, which is a literary journey into the world of culture, in which the author himself is the guide. This guide guides the viewer through the beauty and harmony of works of Mediterranean culture and selected poetic works.
The Barbarian in the Garden opens to the recipient a world of magnificent works of art, about which the poet writes with great erudition and sensitivity. It shrewdly captures the essence of the creative work of painters, but also of the builders of great cathedrals, showing their times and places, which the genius loci poet tries to capture. The narrator of the essays is the eponymous “barbarian”), a man confidently moving in the world of art, interested not only in ancient painting and architecture, but also in the sensual perception of sights, smells and tastes. The pilgrim, the conscious, educated recipient, returning to the country where these “postcards” travel, have a purpose: to evoke the order and harmony on which the culture of Europe is built at a time when it was impossible to recall the basic values “directly”. Herbert finds the “moral constant” in the Greco-Roman tradition, in the foundations of Europe, from which Poland was separated by the judgment of history.
What kind of barbarian in the garden appears to our eyes today? We have in him an attempt by the “dispossessed” to recover what he was robbed of, to restore him to his great homeland in the garden of Europe. Herbert makes us all “masters of tradition”, empowered to choose from it. Writing about art, freedom and slavery, Herbert writes about the Poland of his time, about himself and above all about us.
