In the summer of 1927, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven — Dadaist poet, nude model and proto-punk — wrote a letter to patron Peggy Guggenheim. In prophetic euphoria and apocalyptic urgency, she conjures up her latest project: a studio for experimental modeling, which is intended to mark her artistic comeback and thus a way out of her existential misery. Peggy Guggenheim shows interest but does not pay. Shortly after, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven takes her own life. Almost a century later, “Spirit Plastic” picks up on this forgotten episode in the history of performance art and reimagines Baroness Elsa's Paris studio as a space for today's dilemmas of artistic work. Based on autofictional texts from her late work, the piece develops choreographic worlds and explores models of art and life in the face of an economically, politically and spiritually precarious present.
