Before the film, Pola Dwurnik will give a lecture.
Frank Machin is a miner who wants to get away from working in the mine. Rugby gives him a chance for promotion - thanks to ambition, strength and aggression, he quickly becomes the star of the local team and wins the interest of its influential owner. Success on the field, however, does not translate into life outside of it. Machin remains a man who cannot cope with his own emotions, relationships and need for recognition.
Lindsay Anderson, one of the most important creators of British social cinema, talks in Sports Life about a world in which sport becomes an escape route from the working class. The promotion, however, turns out to be apparent — a change of social position does not solve the hero's problems, but reveals others.
Adapting the novel by former miner and rugby player David Storey, Anderson creates a poignant portrait of a man torn between ambition and the need for closeness. Sports life shows that social advancement can be a source of both pride and frustration, and crossing one line does not yet mean finding your place.
