Meeting with Olga Tokarczuk about the novel “The World is Too Much” on October 18 | Stara Kopalna w Wałbrzych

We invite you to a unique meeting with Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, dedicated to her latest novel “The World is Too Much”.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to meet one of the most important contemporary Polish writers and hear about a book that takes readers on a multidimensional journey through the history, memory, identity and fate of people whose paths intertwine in Lower Silesia.

The meeting will take place on 18 October in the Old Mine in Wałbrzych. We invite you from 15.00, and the conversation with Olga Tokarczuk will begin at 16.00. The meeting will be led by Prof. Magdalena Barbaruk.

About the novel “The world is too much” “The world is too much” is Olga Tokarczuk's most incredible literary journey - stretched between past and present, Lower Silesia and distant corners of the world, individual experience and great history.

The action begins in the spring of 1946, just after the war, in a tenement house in Wrocław destroyed by bombing. On the ruins of the former fortress of Breslau, people with different stories, experiences and secrets meet. They came from places they had to leave behind, carrying the memory of homes, families, landscapes, tastes and smells.

Is it possible to build a new identity on a foreign land? What happens to the memory of a world that has ceased to exist? And how many human destinies can tangle with each other, creating a story greater than we are able to perceive?

In her new novel, Olga Tokarczuk looks at Lower Silesia, particularly Wrocław and Wałbrzych, as a space for one of the greatest social experiments in post-war Europe. However, the story goes much further — to Lviv, Drohobych and Buenos Aires, along the Dniester and Oder, through mountains and lowlands, connecting distant times, places and human stories.

The author describes the book as “an act of faith in the power of life, in the power to build a new one after a disaster,” and in the power of diversity that helps maintain resilience to threats. It is also a story about a complex, multi-layered identity and how the past influences our attempts to build the future.
